Thomas' immediate reaction is to tell the Fat Controller, but Hiro believes that the Fat Controller will scrap him if he finds out about Hiro. He was hidden to avoid scrap, but the parts never came from his island, and he was quietly forgotten. However, as the years went on, he began to show his age and Sodor did not have the necessary parts to repair him. Sodor was nothing like his old home, but he was quite content. Hiro tells how he once worked on another island far away and how he was known as the "Master of the Railway." He sailed to Sodor on a big ship. Thomas is amazed and asks Hiro what he is doing there. After stopping, Thomas finds an old, abandoned engine named Hiro. He gets covered in tree branches as well, until finally coming to a stop. Until he races onto a rickety, old track. Then he hits flatbeds with jam barrels onboard and gets covered in jam. And he hits potato trucks sending potatoes in the air. He races past Spencer who is waiting at a signal. Then the inevitable happens - Thomas' brakes break with a bang and he thunders down the hill and along the main line. Spencer and Thomas race across the Island with the former draws ahead and the latter struggles up a hill with his load. Thomas and Spencer are coupled to their heavy loads and Edward whistles to announce the start of the race. All of the engines gather in the yard to wish Thomas good luck. Spencer then challenges Thomas to a race to take place at dawn the next day. Thomas is fed up and the other engines agree with him. The next morning, at Brendam Docks, Spencer teases Thomas about his size and strength.
That night, all of the engines are tired and cross because they have all been teased by Spencer. Needless to say, nobody is pleased with the news, especially when Spencer rushes around with his work, teasing the other engines. It turns out that he is staying for the summer to help the Duke and Duchess build their summer house. Halfway through their conversation, Spencer arrives. The rest of the Steam Team soon have similar experiences and gather at Knapford to figure out what is going on. Thomas is taking on water when an engine rushes past.
